Cross Country Day 14: Idaho Panhandle National Forest to Wallace

Today I climbed a mountain and fell down

Last night it finally felt like I really slept. Perhaps I'm just getting to the point of exhaustion at th end of the day. Perhaps I'm finally getting the inflation levels right in my sleeping pad. Perhaps my body has just accepted that this is alright. I don't know. But with the sounds of the creek nearby it sure was lovely.

Being in the forest we had to draw on our stores from the previous day for water and food. Cup 'O Noodles for breakfast? Sure!

We packed up camp and started climbing. Up and up and up we went. Not fast by any means. We were on some forest service roads of varying quality. It started paved then we turned and it became rocky gravel. Another turn brought us packed forest dirt. Whichever road we were on the theme was the same. UP. We climbed 1,000 feet in the 1st four miles We were climbing to the 4th of July pass I guess. (btw who gets to name these suckers) Along the way i wobbled a bit and ended up falling over on my bike. Thankfully I wasn't overly hurt just scraped my elbow a bit and Jeff was able to bandage me up.

Along the way we were passed by several mountain bikers taking a lift to the top to just do the downhill. Sneaky cheaters ;)

The views at the top were absolutely gorgeous as we could survey the valley that we would soon descend to. The Coeur D'alene river wound below and the Trail of the Coeur D'alenes ran beside it. The descent..... well I was grateful for breaks. My bike really wanted to fly. And I didn't. So lots of feathering and taking breaks along way to rest my hands. I literally did a cheer when I got to the bottom.

The next 30 is miles were along the trail. The lovely, smooth, paved, straight, FLAT trail. At the sight of the first restroom in 1.5 days my body said stop please or not please. Stop NOW. So I did as was content to then sit in the shade for a bit. It has been sunny and hot!

I then continued to our lunch stop for the the day. The Snake Pit in Enaville. It boasts about being Idaho's oldest restaurant starting in 1880. Pretty sure it is about the only thing left in that town. The trail continued all the way to our end stop for the night an RV park right on the edge of Wallace. Tucked back in the hills it sure was a pretty way to end the day. Since lunch was later we didn't do a big supper opting for a beer and a couple appetizers to share.

'till next time
