Today I took a detour
Thrilled with the success of yesterday's gravel detour off of Montana 200 we decided to try it again. This time we knew there would be no stops, so stocked up ahead of time. Very grateful for those who run little gas stations and convenience stores out here in Rural America. Not sure if they get a ton of people over the day but they work great for me.
Long hills and rolling grasslands dotted the landscape. I saw my first antelope of the trip and several prairie dogs. We made it to Lewistown and regrouped at the local brewery, Big Spring Brewing.
It was a good day. I needed a good day. It's been some tough days of riding, and I just wanted a day where I could spin out my troubles and just get to town. Elevation and distance weren't overly challenging, so I rolled into town feeling good. In fact today was largely downhill. Finally!
After lunch/supper? (time is weird) Alex and I spent a little time exploring Lewistown. The Montana Tavern claims to have a creek flowing underneath it. They even have a viewport in a corner where you can see down. However, as of now I'm going to call this out as suspect. There wasn't a creek to be seen anywhere outside, and the viewport was incredibly dark. You couldn't see anything.
We camped on the edge of town at the Kiwanis Campground. Nothing fancy but there was good grass and a decent restroom. Plus it was FREE! We've had some issues over the last few weeks when it comes to camping. Yes we are a group of 6 with 5 tents. However some places would like to charge us $35+ per tent for just a patch of grass. These are the same places where if I were to pull in with my 35' RV needing full services I would also be charged $35 regardless of how many people were in my RV. It just is difficult to square at times.
'till next time
