Cross Country Day 24: Lewistown to Winnett

Today I saw a cowboy.

Hello from the middle of Montana!

Two Thoughts:

  1. Wow we're halfway across Montana

  2. HOW THE HECK ARE WE ONLY HALFWAY ACROSS MONTANA?

Art is really starting to get his gravel strides together on figuring out if there's a way to avoid Montana 200. I know I give this highway a lot of flack. However, it deserves it. Even though it's been designated as a bicycle path by the state, it is not friendly. At times downright terrifying. So any chance we can get to head off into the great rural gravel lands. We're going to take them.

Also, it was supposed to rain. We even got up extra early to try and get through the gravel sections of today before the rain hit. However the rain was faster than we were. Right as I was about to leave camp a big rainshower hit Lewistown. I decided to wait for this one to pass, and boy I was glad I did. That one rainshower seemed to calm the weather for the rest of the day. The large rolling showers that were supposed to happen all day never appeared. I will take this grace and run (well pedal) with it.

Our gravel routes took us through more ranch land. At one point we even saw some ranchers actively chasing down an errant horse. Also after one long climb we got almost 20 miles of meandering scenic downhill. Uplifting for sure. A welcome lunch stop in Grass Range brought some delicious huckleberry ice cream bars.

The second half the gravel was still very scenic but the road quality wasn't as good in places. It was easy to tell that these roads aren't as popular with the local farmers. They still led all the way to Winnet though. Supper at the local bar and grill and then we stayed at a little motel that had a barn loft space with enough beds for everyone! Huzzah! It's the little things that really can get you excited on this trip.

'till next time
