Cross Country Day 27: Circle to Wibaux

Today was long.

Yesterday I mentioned Deja Vu. Well. Today started with more of the same. Get up. Find Montana 200 and pedal. There were some slight variations on a theme today though. We were on Montana 200S for South (even though it's still Eastbound) and we were only on the highway till the town of Glendive.

Montana 200 wasn't willing to go down without a fight. Hot highways and a decent headwind made for some grinding riding all the way to Glendive. A 20.5 mile line of rail grain cars in storage made for a bit of variation. Graffiti of varying degrees of quality plastered pretty much every car. Jeff called it the Montana Museum of Modern Art. I'll be honest. I feel I was fighting off fatigue a little too much to be overly amused.

Glendive brought us to the banks of the Yellowstone River. That sucker was moving and incredibly muddy. We had ok pizza for lunch which slowly helped to lighten the mood. The day was tough on all of us. Art was the last to roll into town and I could tell that he was DONE. The day had been tough, and he was struggling to get connected with a feeling of going. Frankly I was too. We pushed today so that we could make tomorrow easier. We managed to talk Art off a ledge though with offerings of pizza and the promise of a beer and a bed in just 30 miles. That and a secret ingredient: Red Bull. Gives you wings and gives Art a little gusto to get through the day.

We pushed onward with a stretch of riding on I94. Once again the interstate proved far more polite than Montana 200. I know I might be biased but when you're buzzed by 70mph double tandem gravel trucks. You might start to develop some opinions as well. After the interstate a gorgeous frontage road brought me into Wibaux.

We reconvened at the local brewery and I had some fantastic homemade ziti pasta with chicken for supper. Bonus it had peppers on it. Yum.

Camping was at the local RV park again. The owner was super gracious and we had good evening. I had a good conversation with a guy named Noah about our trip. Guess he's from Idaho and travels Montana 200 regularly to get home. He laughed in understanding when I shared some of our harrowing tales with him. This should be our final night in Montana.

'till next time

-Matt
