Cross Country Day 32: Bismarck to Medina

Today I was cool with construction workers.

Today was just kind of a roll along day. We left Bismark and stopped by a little bakery called the Brick Oven bakery. Walked in and the place smelled wonderful. A good late, chocolate croissant, and a breakfast sandwich and I was on my way. Had to wait a bit for the sandwich somehow things got crossed, but I assure you it was well worth the wait. We left Bismark on a wonderful little road. Apple Cart or something like that. It meandered through some marsh land where I must have spooked up 20 or so ducks and associated waterfowl. Then it was Old US 10. Slowly winding up and down. Pretty uneventful. Saw the first shelter belt in probably 1,000 miles, so that was interesting.

Lunch was in the town of Steele at the local Vets club. By the time we got there the main kitchen was closed for lunch. So I came back outside to let Alex and Art know. We then got into a fantastic conversation about our trip and how things were going. She then said that through the kitchen was closed she could make us a frozen pizza. Done. The conversation continued at the Vets club. Some of the local barflies came in and had all sorts of fun stories to share about lake cabins, family, and adventures. One guy just retired from the DOT and had some crazy road stories. We also learned there were some water closures up ahead and the best way to get around them was to take the interstate.

Interstate was pretty good to ride through there was a 5 mile section or so where it was down to one set of lanes. The reason coincidentally was local flooding! Construction crews were actively taking dirt from a local hill to raise the interstate up 10 feet in that spot. It felt a little gauntetly at that point but got through alright.

Our stop for the night was the town of Medina. We had supper at the local spot Gundy's. Supper was absolutely fantastic. I had the chicken dinner, and I assure you that it was a winner. Afterwards a large bowl of ice cream for only a buck! Also had lots of conversations with some of the construction workers that were on the interstate project. I took it as a sign that we were at the right place for supper if they were all there too. The workers had seen us roll through and were really excited to talk to us about our adventures. One guy said that he was using his construction work to travel the country, and was very jealous of our journey. It was sure nice to have those conversations instead of an argument about how we don't belong there. Camped at the very nice local city park/campground. Art has told us of imminent rain tomorrow, so the goal for the morning is to get out as fast as possible. We're also shortening tomorrow's ride and adding a rest day to try and make sure we stay dry.

'till next time
