Cross Country Day 33: Medina to Jamestown

Today I raced the rain

Woke up this morning with one goal. Beat the rain. Art had promised rain. We went to bed expecting rain around 10am. Art wasn't even going to make coffee! If there is one thing that has become pretty apparent this trip is that Art does not move without coffee. So my morning mission was to get up early and get going. I didn't even fully pack my tent. I was saying that I was taking the rock-and-roll method. Throw it all in a bag, and I'll figure it out later. As long as I have all the pieces, I can sort it out in the next town.

Well that was the mode until I saw that Art hadn't gotten up, I suspected something was up. He rolled out of his tent and said the rain wasn't supposed to start until a little bit later. Sigh..... Well panic mode abated, I continued on. I mean I wasn't about to set the tent back up to take a nap.

I rolled out of town again on I94. Today was going to be a short day. 30 miles to Jamestown. The interstate was fine. Cars were nice. Things were morning along. We were on the interstate because there was supposed to be some additional flooding just past Medina. Eventually I figured I would take a risk. I was ready to get off the interstate and find something new. Seems my timing was just about right. Great gravel and a scenic descent into Jamestown along the James River. Most importantly, I beat the rain. Breakfast was at Babbs. Branded as a taste of Seattle, I joked that I was a little bummed to be riding for over a month and I can still see the Space Needle. Well at least I think I'm funny.

We then checked out a bit of single track on our way to the World's Largest Buffalo at the top of the hill. Hadn't I already seen the World's Largest Cow only a day ago? That's when it started to sprinkle and we headed for the hotel. Tomorrow is a rain day/rest day. it's supposed to rain upwards of two inches. I shall be grateful to be inside and dry.

'til next time
