Cross Country Day 38: Ashby to St. Cloud

Today I reminisced

Today started with a rain delay. It rained last night and into this morning. Nothing severe but a good rain. I enjoyed a cup of coffee staring out at the lake. "Welcome Home" Alex told me, and we'll, I'd have to agree. I do love lake country.

That was perhaps the last tranquil moment of the day. 3 hour rain delay plus 90 miles means I spent most of the rest of the day feeling behind. When I feel behind I feel like I have to push harder. When I push harder I get more tired. When I'm tired I'm cranky and there isn't a Snickers in sight. You get the idea.

I tried to enjoy the day though. Had a fantastic breakfast sandwich while I tried to power bump my computer. My brick didn't get fully charged and so was unable to fully charge my electronics. Then it was off to Alexandria. Gotta get a pic with Ole. This area of the country is special to me because this is where we came growing up for summer vacations. My aunt and uncle (Jan and Gene) had a cabin on Lake Ida. Lake Ida is where we would get to go fishing for that one weekend a year. We'd have campfires and hang out on the lawn. My uncles taught me to play cribbage, and there was always a secret stash of Twizzlers.

It was trail all day today. Conditions improved as we headed eastward. Some of the cracks on the west end could darn near throw your tire if you're not careful. Spent the 2nd half of the day riding with Jeff and on the Lake Wobegon trail. Fans of a former radio show might know why I was so excited. Even stopped at the Cafe that served as the inspiration for the Chatterbox.

I was very glad to get to St. Cloud. Today was long and hard. Not much for elevation but yet a day that never seemed to end. With the delay I kept looking at my watch and sighing. I just couldn't seem to make up time. The hotel was a welcome sight. Gives us a chance to hang up some wet camping gear as everything was still soaking wet from the morning.

Tomorrow is a new day. For that I shall be thankful.

'til next time

-Matt
