Cross Country Day 45: Trempealeau to Reedsburg

Today was a longer day so we could have a shorter day into our rest day into Madison. It was also special for me because my folks and my girlfriend Madison Stahl joined me for the first miles of the day. It seemed like a small full circle moment to be riding with my parents on this incredible journey. I was so grateful that that drove 4 hours to join me for a few miles. They're the ones that taught me to ride and we would spend many a Sunday afternoon going for short rides around SW Minnesota. A special moment indeed. Madison and I continued to Onalaska where she hopped in with Edie and I said goodbye to my folks.

Then it was onward. It was a day full of Wisconsin state trails including the Great River, Elroy-Sparta, and the "400". It was very scenic with lots of trees creating almost magical tunnels along the way. Speaking of tunnels the Elroy-Sparta has 3 well known tunnels. The largest is over a mile long and its always raining inside due to ground water. The tunnel was designed to handle water by having a drainage ditch on the edge of the rail surface. It can be quite chilly in the tunnels as well.

I learned that the Elroy-Sparta was one of the first rail trails in the nation. It's still well cared for and has become a large part of the local economy.

I rode with Jason Mueller for the last 30 miles of the day into Reedsburg. Supper was at a fantastic local spot Beastro and Barley. Home cooked from scratch. Not fried. Fresh. Flavorful and VEGETABLES! Shrimp and Pasta was the special.

We camped at the city park where they had a great shower and restroom setup. I really enjoy when these small towns have amenities for travelers. I don't require a lot so a little goes a long way.

'til next time
