Cross Country Day 48: Madison to Pinewoods State Park

Today I kept the pace

Today was a nice for a shorter day. We're trying to time our arrival to Chicago so we can meet up with our friend David Heinold . It was also great because that meant there was time to really enjoy the day.

Started by going to the Art's in the Square fine arts festival up by the capital. So much talent. Paintings, glass, sculpture, and more. One of my favorite vendors turned every day items into fun whimsical sculptures.

Then it was out of Madison along the lake and the city's extensive bike trail network. The trails were busy and cars were very patient. I really enjoyed seeing how a city can work not just for people who drive. Art commented it was probably as close to a feeling of Copenhagen as he was going to get.

I found an amazing piece of apple pie at the trailhead for the Glacial Drumlin trail. Real apples, homemade crust, and a pecan topping. The trail was very similar to the trails we were riding a couple days ago and felt smooth and fast. Lots of trees provided great cover as well.

Stopped for lunch at what might be one of my new favorite breweries. Sunshine Brewing. Awesome grilled burritos and the beer might have been some of my favorite of the trip. It's a very bike firstly place as they host group rides amd sponsor races for Trek. We spent a good amount of time chatting with a couple from Madison who knew a bunch of folks from the SD mountain biking/adventure scene. They gave us a few recommendations for the upcoming section as well.

Then we raced to Dousman. Well..... I raced and Alex rode. But I'm going to be darn proud of myself for keeping pace with him for almost 30 miles. Supper was a solid baked lasagna. The supper spot had a constant stream of to go orders headed out the door so I new we were at the right place.

Then out to the Pinewoods State Park. It was after sunset by the time we got there but I was in a great mood so I didn't care. Still enough light to set up camp. Thankful for Wisconsin also having a no turn away. We got to camp in a huge back area surrounded by pine trees. I left the rain fly off and got to watch tons of fireflies floating about. They almost looked like shooting stars.

'til next time

-Matt
