Cross Country Day 50: Illinois Beach State Park to Chicago

Today I went to the heart of the big city

Rolled out of the state park and began making our way south. At first we had large chunks of trail but as we began working our way through the suburbs the trail became very stop/start as you crossed side streets and waited for lights. At one point I was going through a neighborhood and had major home alone vibes going. So I looked up where it was filmed anticipating to be way off. Well it was only a mile away so I had to make a detour. City riding is very different from country riding. It requires I think a heightened sense of awareness and perhaps a little bit more forcefulness in taking up space. I tried to watch the locals to see what behavior was anticipated and mimic that.

Our first major landmark was Wrigley Field. I'm not much of a baseball fan but it was cool to see. Then it was down to the lake where we rode along the lakeshore. Lots of people out today. Lots of beach goers runners walkers and bikers. The great skyscrapers of town continued to get closer.

Had to get a pic in Millenium Park at "The Bean" then it was off to our hotel. Right in the theater district. The show at the theater next door will tour to Sioux Falls next season.

We went to the Riverwalk to hang out for a bit. Lots of folks mulling about. Boats went up and down including the Chicago Fire Department boat.

Had an amazing chance to meet up with a dear high school friend Ally. We've been trying to get together for forever so to have a chance to catch up on the Riverwalk was amazing and so very much needed. We talked theater, friends, family and more. Supper was at a place of Ally's choosing. Cheesies. Grilled cheese turned up a notch. It was cool to ride the train and stare out at the city. Alex and I got to try the Chicago tradition of a shot of Malort. One was plenty.

A quick train ride back to the hotel and that was a day. I've been viewing Chicago as another major landmark. A gateway to the East if you will. I think we're over 2/3rds done now

'til next time
