Cross Country Day 55: Potawatomie Recreation Area to Ann Arbor

Today I got wet.

Thankfully the storms from last night didn't pack a ton of wind. Just rain rain and more rain. We talked to one local farmer who said he got almost 2.5 inches. My tent held pretty well. I got lightly misted a couple times though I'm not sure if that was due due to outside rain or inside condensation. Either way I was warm and much drier than outside. Appreciated the lightning show quite a bit too.

The mileage today felt sluggish. I could tell I was counting down till the end almost right from the beginning. Made it only a few miles out of camp before it started raining again. Thankfully only light rain but still rain. Stopped at the farmers market in Homer and had a seriously great homemade cinnamon roll.

Near Concord we picked up the Falling Waters trail. I joked that it's a mythical trail that only appears when it's raining. But the trails out this way were in beautiful shape. At one point it was so smooth the rain looked like glass on the trail.

Had to stop on Jackson for a quick repair. Pretty sure my front brake wasn't releasing all the way so it was causing some really annoying scraping sounds as I was rolling along. Glad we did stop or otherwise i would have missed all the cool murals in downtown. Jackson had a large mural on almost every building. One even was designed to be viewed through colored lenses giving you a different perspective depending on which color was filtered out. A fantastic lunch at the Enchanted Cafe gave us a chance to wait out the rain and let the sunshine return. We even found a fan who gave us $20 as a little encouraging tip. We really are getting to do something special and it's fun to be reminded of that.

After the rain ended my mood began to improve. Chelsea was a delightful little boutique town and the beginnings of a trail connector we nice to be bop around. When that trail is done it is going to be stunning.

Had to make a quick stop at the A&W for a frosty mug. True drive-in only A&Ws are hard to find so couldn't pass up the chance. Wasn't even a problem that I was on my bike! Rolled into a parking spot and they were happy to help.

The attitude towards bikes around here is pretty positive. On the highway into Ann Arbor I must have seen over 20 riders going back and forth. Downtown was really cool as we learned they block off the downtown core to traffic on the weekends. It started as a response to Covid but its grown into quite and event. Almost every restaurant had large outdoor areas and they even had a live band at the end of the block. The mood was great, and it was so nice to relax after a long day.

Supper was something new for this trip. Indian! We found it based on a couple of the street recommendations and it was delicious. I had the lamb korma.

We then meandered out to the hotel which of course was uphill because why not. Next we head to Detroit and then Canada!

'til next time
