Cross Country Day 59: Dresden to St. Thomas

Today I found an elephant

Today started fairly straight forward. We're continuing through the farmlands of Ontario. Corn, beans, wheat, and perhaps most surprisingly large fields of tomatoes.

After lunch things got a little more interesting. David and Alex were towards the font and told us the trail was not great at all. I was not in much of a mood to mess with terrible trail, so I kind of made my own route to St Thomas. After we all got back together it sounded like we all more or less did the same thing but we all ended up on slightly different routes.

The way the roads are laid out here is rather interesting. Things are relatively straight but everything is on the diagonal it seems. So if you want to go straight east you end up making a zig zag motion.

Once in St Thomas I discovered the "mascot" of the town, Jumbo the elephant who was killed by a train. St Thomas also has an elevated train bridge that has been turned into a sculpture park! I missed it on my reroute but only had to backtrack a couple blocks. It was worth it.

We ended up regrouping at a local brewery called Caps Off where lots of folks were excited to learn about our journey. I hope i'll be able to share that same excitement with other travelers some day. It goes a long way to lifting one's spirits after a long ride and I am always grateful.

Supper was a build your own pasta at a place called Bistro which was at the recommendation of the brewery. Excellent! I did blush sauce with meatballs peppers and spinach.

We're camping at Canada's version of a state park. They call them conservation areas. It's very nice and a welcome end to a good day.

'til next time
