Cross Country Day 9: Wanapum State Park to Othello

Today I crossed a river

As I mentioned earlier we are in RURAL Washington. Today was pretty much an uninterrupted span of 50 miles. No stops for water, no places to get snacks. So make sure you hit the gas station on your way out.

We started by rolling downhill to the recently finished Beverly bridge. This is an old train bridge that is in its FIRST year of being open for pedestrian/bicycle traffic. For this I am very grateful. Otherwise we would have had to use the I90 bridge crossing. The power of the wind and the river was something to behold. A large hydropower plant sits just upstream of the bridge.

After stocking up in Beverly we rolled along this incredible ridge for miles and miles. I asked several times if I was living in a postcard as the reality of it was just incredible.

We rolled through more farmland and even saw a cherry orchard.

About 25 minutes in I stopped and had my lunch. An absolutely fantastic cheeseburger. Who knew you could find cheeseburgers in the middle of nowhere. Well you really can't I had brought it from Beverly. But oh it was good.

Our destination for the evening was the town of Othello. Population approx 8,500. Largest we've had since Ellensburg. We camped at the county campground which brought a lovely large grass patch and blissful shade.

One thing I had to note about this area is because it is dry the irrigation continues. This includes the grass at the fairgrounds which seems to be under a 24/7 irrigation regimen. (Thankfully not our camping spot tonight). In a land that doesn't seem to get any water. They have more than enough to keep the grass green. Where does it all come from and how much must that cost!

Supper was an adventure. We wanted mexican, but everything in this town seems to shut down at like 3 or 4 in the afternoon. So four attempts later we found a taco truck. Lingua burrito for me please. Fantastic.

'till next time
